BEING PREPARED FOR CRISIS click here for case study
Challenge A leading global agricultural commodities group was concerned that it lacked a true crisis and issues management capability. The company’s communications director asked us to assess and make recommendations on creating a best in class crisis and issues management strategy.
Solution We created an in depth questionnaire to run through with the senior leadership team, focused on crisis capabilities, historic crises and how they were dealt with, probable future issues correlated with level of seriousness, health of stakeholder relationships, robustness of policies and many other variables. From this research, cross matched with our own extensive experience of best practice, we drew up a report with key recommendations for the firm. One of the fundamental aspects of this was the development of a rigorous but practical crisis strategy and manual. Once we had done this, we were asked to ‘bring it to life’ during an Executive Retreat in London, where we created for 30 of the firm’s global senior leaders, a realistic crisis simulation, with role play, camera crews, actors and a pressurized scenario that required teams to put into practice the guidelines from the manual.
Results The first session with the leadership team was so successful that the company asked us to repeat the training for regional leadership in the Asia Pacific region, North America region, Latin America, Europe and Middle East. Feedback was positive with special mention made of the realistic scenarios, the practical help within crisis manuals and from the workshop leaders, and constant development opportunities that arose during each training, for example, to optimise local stakeholder relations.
